A brief but controversial change in 1996 to the iconic theme music of WPVI-TV’s 6abc Action News is the subject of a new documentary that explores the uproar among viewers and the quick reversal by the station.
“Move Closer to Your World,” the theme song that has been a signature of 6abc Action News since the 1970s, briefly underwent a change on September 20, 1996. However, after just three days and a flood of negative feedback, the station reverted to the original version of the song that is known for its distinctive 1970s flair.
The affair is now captured in the documentary short “The Mix of ’96: The Day Action News Changed Its Anthem.”
The short documentary is styled after a true-crime show and delves into the events that led to the temporary switch.
According to to the documentary, the new version, which was produced by NFL Films and recorded by the Symphony of London, was actually an incomplete mix—a detail that only surfaced earlier this year.
Station management, however, denies that the incorrect version was broadcast.
Tanya Husar, managing editor for 6abc Action News, pointed to the theme’s deep connection to the city’s culture.
“That theme is part of the city’s identity. You ask about Philadelphia and they’ll tell you about cheesesteaks, pretzels, and Action News,” said Husar.
Despite the brief change in 1996, the theme has seen occasional updates over the years, but it remains largely faithful to its original composition by Walt Liss.
The theme is also used by other U.S. stations, including WKBW-TV in Buffalo and WNEP-TV in Scranton.
“Move Closer To Your World,” which has its lyrics performed by The Hillside Singers, has woven itself into the local pop culture and is often covered by bands and featured in DJ sets across the city.
